How many pitchers can say they won nearly 300 games, played in the majors for 26 seasons and had a surgical procedure named after them? The answer: just one- and his name is Tommy John. During his long career, John won 288 games, most of them with the White Sox, Dodgers and Yankees, and he retired with a 3.34 lifetime ERA. But back in 1974, when John damaged the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm, his days on the mound seemed over. Fortunately, John underwent a then-radical and now-common procedure referred to as Tommy John surgery in which the ligament was replaced with a tendon. After a year of physical rehab, John returned to the game he loved and notched another 164 wins before retiring in 1989. In recent years, John has worked as a broadcaster, coach and manager, and he has served as a roving instructor for the New York Yankees. Tommy John has hand signed this 16x20 black and white photograph of him in action with the Bombers. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included.
