A-Rod, Jeter, Rivera and Giambi may be the marquee names on the New York Yankees, but they can't do it alone. Already during the 2006 season, when injuries threatened to derail the Bombers' bid for yet another run at the AL East pennant, guys like Andy Phillips, Melky Cabrera and Miguel Cairo have come through time and again, just as Aaron Small, Chien-Ming Wang and Robinson Cano did in 2005. Phillips, for example, is a 29-year-old whose talent and perseverance convinced Yankees manager Joe Torre to keep him on the roster, and he has responded by providing superb late-game defense at first base and swinging a surprisingly powerful bat which has produced some mighty timely hits.
